Turning the Commute Into a Pause
The commute is easy to treat as dead time: something to endure, drown in noise, or spend rehearsing the day ahead. Yet those in-between minutes are some of the few in a day that belong to no one but you.
Approached differently, the journey becomes a natural threshold: a chance to arrive somewhere as a person who has actually landed, rather than one already three meetings deep before walking through the door.
Ways to work with it
Pick a sensory anchor
The hum of the train, the road under the tyres, the rhythm of your own steps. Let one steady sound or sensation hold your attention for a stretch.
Leave the day at the threshold
Use the start of the journey to set work down and the end of it to pick home up. The commute becomes the clean seam between the two.
Resist the reflex to fill it
Before reaching for a podcast or the phone, try a few minutes of simply looking out the window. Boredom is often calm wearing a plain coat.
Reflections to carry
The workday can end at the door if you let it. Breathe out the meeting you are still replaying, and walk in as the person your evening is waiting for.
You cannot make the train move faster by tensing against it. Loosen your grip on the rail and on the hurry alike; you will arrive at the same moment either way.
Words from the teachers
Not our own reflections, but the words of teachers and texts that have shaped mindfulness. Each one is credited to its source, and popular lines that can't be traced to the person they're credited to are left out.
“The journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one’s feet.”
Write your own moment of stillness
On your way in or home, tell us how the day is sitting on you, and let one line mark the threshold.
